How to Perform Aarti
Preparation
Prepare the aarti thali (plate) with a diya (lamp) filled with ghee or oil, incense sticks, flowers, kumkum, and other offerings.
Light the Lamp
Light the diya and incense sticks. The flame represents the divine light that removes darkness and ignorance.
Begin the Aarti
Start singing or playing the aarti hymn. Hold the aarti thali in your hands and stand before the deity with reverence.
Circular Motion
Move the aarti thali in a clockwise circular motion before the deity. This symbolizes that the deity is the center of our universe.
Conclusion
After completing the aarti, devotees often pass their hands over the flame and then touch their eyes and the top of the head, symbolizing the receiving of divine blessings.
